A brief gameplay summary
Honey I'm Comb » Devlog
Here's how the game works - a tale in pictures:
- Hive Buildings - Once the hive has gathered sufficient resources, worker bees can construct buildings in the hive. All buildings except the Throne can be dismantled to increase the unit cap, and doing so will automatically revert any associated units to worker bees. These are:
- Barracks (the purple cell) - Allows a single worker to train as a Drone. Drones are purpose trained for battle and move twice as fast as a worker and deal double the damage of a worker.
- Laboratory (the light blue cell with the table inside) - Allows a single worker to train as a Scientist. Scientists move slower than workers but have more powerful (but slower) attacks. In a future version of the game they will also be the only unit that can restore a withered daisy to life, allowing workers to harvest nectar from them once more.
- Throne (the black cells) - The queen's home. The throne allows the player to create more worker bees depending on the number of empty cells (yes, the more buildings you have the fewer units you can create).
- Storeroom (not shown, bright yellow) - These will increase the total amount of resources the hive can have at any one time (not yet implemented).
- Sentry (not shown, transparent) - Each sentry increases the attack rate and damage of the hive's autonomous defenses.
- Wall (not shown, grey) - Each wall increases the durability of the hive.
- Worker bees - Worker bees crawl across the hive while inside it and can move to any unoccupied cell. If a worker is reassigned, it will automatically move toward one of the buildings linked to its new role to retrain. Bees can exit the hive by moving to the glowing cell at the bottom. Growing a new bee is not free of charge - to do so requires consumption of nectar.
- The Hive - Looming large over the flower forest, the Hive is the core of the kingdom. It must be protected at all costs. Players will lose the game if the hive is destroyed by attackers. Building sentries will improve the defense of the hive and building walls will increase the durability of it. And so you must strike a balance: more units, or more hive defenses?
- Wasps and Rotten Stumps - The map has three rotten stumps - one in the centre and the other two in opposite corners north of the Hive in the Decayed zone. You can tell where this area is by the withered daisies and flowers. From these rotten stumps, waves of wasps will spawn. Once a wave has assembled, it will launch an attack on the hive. The size of the waves and the spawn rate exponentially increase over time, making the wasps more dangerous as the game draws on. If the player is able to destroy all three of these rotten stumps, they will win the game.
- Resources - There are two resources useful to the Hive: Pebbles and Nectar. Pebbles can be harvested from large rocks dotted across the map. Nectar, as you would've guessed, can be harvested from daisies (those are the small flowers with white petals, in case you were wondering). Worker bees are the only units that can harvest these resources, and will do so autonomously once they have received the order until they are issued new orders or the resource is depleted. Workers must deposit resources at the hive for the hive to make use of them.
That's it for now. Stay tuned for further updates!
